Remember toiling through The Canterbury Tales in high school? Nobody thanked Chaucer for that one, but we can thank the English poet for adding the romance to the day that became known as Valentine’s Day. Prior to the publication of Chaucer’s 1381 poem, “Parliament of Fowls,” February 14 was known by its saint’s name designation (St. Valentine), a date that coincided with the time of year birds began mating. Thus, Chaucer claimed the day “when every fowl comes there his mate to take,” and the rest is history.
